Jesus or the dow jones

One Sunday morning, our Pastor confronted us with something that caught my attention.

He said, “Is your hope in Jesus? Or is all your hope in the Dow Jones?”

I wish Pastors wouldn’t do that. It is Sunday morning and I just want a nice message and some great music before I head home for a meal.

Ok, that’s not really what I want. I want the challenge of a Christ centered message. His question is something we all need to think about. Do you get up each morning and look to see what the Dow Jones is doing? I do because my retirement fund is dependent on the Stock Market.

For myself, I settled the question of who I depend on and who owns what I have? That happened in an evening service in 1985 and yes, I said at an evening service which has become a thing of the past in many churches. Sunday night football took some of us away.

One night the same type of question was asked, and I had to look deep in my soul, and I did not like what I saw. I went forward that night and ask for forgiveness because my priorities were not right. That night I told the Lord that from now on, He owned everything I have. I would be the caretaker of what He gave me and whatever He wants, He can have. What a freeing moment that was for me.

If the Dow Jones collapses and I should lose it all, I have not lost. “And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Where is your hope? Maybe, now is a good time to check your priorities,
