Remember who you are

I had the honor of attending my grandson’s 8th grade graduation at his Christian school. I loved watching those young people sitting on the stage knowing they are on to a bigger future.

I was struck by some things Mrs. Fischer has said in her Commencement Address to the students.

She said, “Growing up, anytime we would leave the house without my mom or dad, my mom never skipped a beat in saying, “Remember who you are”, before we shut the door. I cannot remember a time when she did not say this to us. It was her way of reminding us that every decision we made mattered, now and for eternity.”

I believe Mrs. Fisher was blessed to have a mom like that. We really do need to be reminded that every time we stepped out into the world, we need to remind ourselves of who we are and who we belong to.

She also said, “Leave a little Jesus wherever you go!” As a follower of Jesus, how should we act when we are in public. Do we leave a little Jesus when we are on hold a long time on the phone? What about when the store clerk isn’t very attentive to us, or when that person who tailgated you and then passed. Did you look like Jesus?

The Apostle Peter wrote this, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” 1 Pet. 2:9

If we are a chosen people who belong to God, should we always remember who we are wherever we are? When we go out into the world today, will we remember that?

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven. Mt. 5:16

So, maybe Mrs. Fischer has it right. Every time we go out our door, why don’t we remember her words, “Remember who you are!”

Lord, help me to let my “Light shine,”
